(Netanyahu’s statements in italics)
Three thousand years ago, King David reigned over the Jewish state in our eternal capital, Jerusalem. I say that to all those who proclaim that the Jewish state has no roots in our region and that it will soon disappear.
I don’t know how much credence can be given to the Bible (historically speaking) but I do know that a large proportion of the Jews that are now in Israel came from Europe . Netanyahu’s family were previously called Mileikowsky.
The Jewish people have lived in the land of Israel for thousands of years. Even after most of our people were exiled from it, Jews continued to live in the land of Israel throughout the ages. The masses of our people never gave up the dreamed of returning to our ancient homeland.
Jewish people have lived everywhere and their is ample evidence to suggest that they lived amongst Palestinians throughout the years but it doesn’t give them the right to ethnically clean the indigenous people because they believe it is their ‘historical homeland’. It’s a preposterous and racist ideology.
Defying the laws of history, we did just that. We ingathered the exiles, restored our independence and rebuilt our national life. The Jewish people have come home.
‘Defying the laws’ …. No mention of the people that already lived there.
Israel stands proudly with the forces of modernity. We protect the rights of all our citizens: men and women, Jews and Arabs, Muslims and Christians – all are equal before the law.
Israeli Arabs cannot get planning permission to upgrade their homes or build new ones. There are much higher rates of unemployment. Adalah, the Legal Centre for Minority Rights in Israel claims that there are more than 35 Israeli laws explicitly privileging Jews over non-Jews.
We seek to preserve our historic ties and our historic peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan. We seek to forge a durable peace with the Palestinians.
If Israel were enthusiastic about a peace process with the Palestinians , they wouldn’t be building more and more settlements despite the condemnation of many organisations. These crimes against Palestinians should be met with sanctions.
(Netanyahu speaking of Iran) In 2009, they brutally put down mass protests for democracy in their own country. Today, their henchmen are participating in the slaughter of tens of thousands of Syrian civilians, including thousands of children, directly participating in this murder.
Since when was Netanyahu worried about the rights of Arabs? There is absolutely no evidence of Iranians fighting for Syria , however there is evidence that foreigners constitute a large proportion of the FSA (Free Syrian Army).
And of course, Iran’s rulers repeatedly deny the Holocaust and call for Israel’s destruction almost on a daily basis, as they did again this week from the United Nations.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has stated that the Holocaust shouldn’t be a no go area for historians (which it is in many European countries).
Iran’s apocalyptic leaders believe that a medieval holy man will reappear in the wake of a devastating Holy War, thereby ensuring that their brand of radical Islam will rule the earth.
Is that very different from Jewish the religious philosophy?
I’ve been speaking about the need to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons for over 15 years.
He got that part right … Just change ‘speaking’ to ‘speculating’.
Earlier this year, Iran threatened to close the Straits of Hormouz. The United States drew a clear red line and Iran backed off.
They threatened to close the Straits in response to repeated US and Israel threats to attack them and the ongoing sanctions (in themselves an act of war).
The relevant question is not when Iran will get the bomb. The relevant question is at what stage can we no longer stop Iran from getting the bomb.
Where is the evidence? There is none. Furthermore , how can Iran do any more to prove it than they already are doing? Inspectors have access to all aspects of the nuclear power installations but have been denied access to certain places that Iran consider to be of national security. That doesn’t mean to say that anything untoward regarding nuclear weapons is being hidden there. Stocks of important nuclear material are closely monitored so that Iran can not surreptitiously shift it to a weapons program. When will the inspectors be allowed entry to Israel’s nuclear facilities?
